Hawaii DOH Launches Elder Abuse Awareness Campaign with KHON2

Elder abuse is a critical issue that affects our senior community. Alarmingly, at least 10% of adults aged 60 and older will experience some form of elder abuse. To combat this pressing problem and raise public awareness, the Executive Office on Aging is partnering with KHON2 for an extensive elder abuse awareness media campaign.

The campaign aims to educate the public about the signs of elder abuse, how to prevent it, and what steps to take if you suspect someone is being abused. By leveraging the reach of KHON2, the initiative hopes to inform a broader audience and foster a community that is vigilant and proactive in protecting its elderly members.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect. Recognizing these signs is the first step in preventing abuse. Common indicators include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in financial situations, withdrawal from normal activities, and poor hygiene.

To increase awareness, the campaign will feature informative segments on KHON2, highlighting real stories, expert advice, and resources available for victims and their families. The goal is to empower viewers with the knowledge and tools they need to safeguard our seniors.

For a more in-depth look at this important initiative, you can watch the full interview with representatives from the Hawaii Department of Health and KHON2. They discuss the campaign’s objectives and provide valuable insights into how everyone can play a part in preventing elder abuse.
