Medicare and Medicaid are two separate government health programs. Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 and older, or younger adults with certain disabilities or conditions. Your income doesn’t affect whether you can get Medicare. Medicaid, on the other hand, are government assistance programs for people with very low income and limited resources.
Some people qualify for both programs – this is called being “dual eligible.” If you are dual eligible, Medicare and Medicaid work together to lower your costs and help cover services. Each program may cover different parts of your care, so it’s important to understand how they fit together.
