Good News for Hawaii’s Kupuna: 2025 Brings Lower Medicare Drug Costs

May 30, 2025 | Views: 346

Healthcare affordability is a growing concern in our islands, especially for seniors and those living in rural areas. But starting in 2025, major changes under the Inflation Reduction Act are bringing relief to Medicare beneficiaries throughout Hawaii. If you or a loved one relies on prescription medications, here’s what you need to know to save more and stress less.

Lower Drug Costs for Medicare Enrollees

One of the most impactful changes coming in 2025 is a dramatic drop in the out-of-pocket limit for prescription drug costs. Currently set at $8,000, that annual cap will fall to just $2,000 per calendar year. This change will help thousands of kupuna better manage their healthcare costs without worrying about going into debt for necessary medications.

 “Donut Hole” Coverage Gap Removed

The dreaded Medicare “Donut Hole”—a coverage gap that made some pay more for their prescriptions—is being eliminated. This is a huge win for people who take high-cost medications, as they will now have continuous support throughout the year.

More People Qualify for “Extra Help”

More Hawaii residents will also become eligible for “Extra Help”, a program through the Social Security Administration that provides additional financial assistance for prescription costs. This expansion means that more kupuna, especially those living on a fixed income, will get the support they need.

Coming in 2026: Lower Prices for High-Cost Drugs

Looking ahead, 10 of the most expensive prescription drugs will have their prices reduced starting in 2026. While this is still a year away, it’s part of a larger effort to make healthcare more affordable for all Medicare beneficiaries.

 Voluntary Monthly Payment Plans Available

Beginning in 2025, Hawaii residents can also opt into a voluntary payment plan to help spread out the cost of prescriptions over the year. Rather than paying large sums at the pharmacy all at once, you’ll receive a monthly bill from your provider, helping to make your healthcare costs more predictable.
