At Hawaii SHIP, we know caregiving is an act of love — but it can also be challenging without the right support. That’s why we’re excited to share important news: Medicare now covers caregiver training to help family caregivers feel more confident and supported when providing care to their loved ones.
This new benefit is a big step forward in improving the health and well-being of both Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.
Starting in 2025, Medicare will pay for caregiver training when it’s part of the beneficiary’s treatment plan. This means if your loved one’s doctor determines that a caregiver is needed to help with medications or personal care, Medicare may cover the training necessary to prepare you.
Here’s what you need to know:
Who Qualifies?
The caregiver must be assisting a Medicare beneficiary whose doctor includes caregiver training as part of the patient’s health goals.
What’s Covered?
Training may include how to properly give medications, manage symptoms, assist with mobility, and provide daily personal care.
Cost to Beneficiaries:
Beneficiaries will pay 20% of the Medicare-approved charges for training after meeting the $257 Part B deductible.
Where Training Happens:
Training can be provided individually or in a group, through the beneficiary’s healthcare provider.
For many kūpuna, staying safe, independent, and healthy at home depends on the skills and knowledge of their caregivers. Now, Medicare is making it easier for caregivers to get the proper training — helping to:
Improve caregiving confidence
Reduce hospital readmissions
Enhance the quality of care for kupuna
